Division by Division Information

7U

Teeball baseball is a development level in which the fundamental skills (throwing, catching and hitting) are learned in a fun and non-competitive environment with an infield of 5-6 players only.  The primary focus being on fun and sportsmanship.

In this division, players are provided with an opportunity to experience the elements of a shortened baseball game (infield only) with little or no consequence of errors and encouragement to develop skills.  A Softee or Incrediball ball is used to improve confidence in catching and fielding the ball as well as the benefit of a further hit ball.  The games have a time limit with a minimum of 2 innings.

Every player bats.  All hits are singles.  At the beginning of the season, a baseball is set on the batting tee with players batting the ball and running through first base.  Fielders are taught fundamental skills of fielding the ball and throwing to 1st base.  Base running skills are also introduced where players advance only 1 base on a hit (not overrunning 2nd or 3rd).  Also, no stealing or lead-offs.  Runners may be coached what to do in a given situation on a pop-fly or grounder only if the fundamental skills have been learned.

Volunteer parent coaches will receive support and free training clinics to ensure they are comfortable to provide the basic fundamental skills and ensure that the players have fun.  Scores are not kept or posted.  There are no winners or losers.  At the end of each game the teams will have a fun base running race then shake hands with opposing team.

Tadpole baseball is a development level in which the fundamental skills (throwing, catching and hitting) and knowledge of the game are learned in a fun and non-competitive environment with balanced teams.  The primary focus being on fun and sportsmanship.

In this division of play, players are provided with an opportunity to experience the elements of a shortened baseball game with put outs and swinging outs using a level 5 baseball.  The games will have a time limit with a min. 4 innings and max 6 innings (max 4 runs per inning).

At the beginning of the season, a batter receives pitches from a slinger pitching machine at low speed with players encouraged to swing at all balls.  Midway in the season, a pitch rule is used where only swinging strikes are observed as a strike.  In the final weeks of the season, 2nd year players are encouraged to pitch the 1st inning and batters are given opportunity to swing at a pitched ball from a 2nd year player. Base running skills are also introduced where players advance only on a hit or a base on balls (no stealing or lead-offs).  Runners will learn what to do in a given situation on a pop-fly or grounder (infield fly rule will not be enforced).

Parent coaches will receive support and training to ensure they are comfortable to provide the basic fundamental skills and ensure the players have fun.

Mosquito baseball is a development level in which the fundamental skills (throwing, catching and hitting) and knowledge of the game are learned and expanded upon with situational play in a fun and mildly competitive environment with balanced teams.  Development focus will be on improvement of player fitness, skill and knowledge of the game with the foundation built on fun and sportsmanship.

In this division of play, players are provided an opportunity to experience the elements of a shortened baseball game with live pitching of an official hard ball.  Interlock games (with other nearby associations) will have a time limit for the entire game and max runs per inning with both a Plate Umpire and Base Umpire.  At the end of the season, Interlock Championship play-offs will be held.   In July, Summer Ball team(s) will represent Burnaby Valkyries and compete in Interlock games to qualify for the BC Provincial Championships.

Pitchers are developed with learning a proper warm-up and throwing technique (Balk pitch not enforced).  Pitch counts are recorded and must be observed as per BC rules.  Catchers are developed to catch/stop the ball, attempt to throw out base stealing runners and making the throw of a live ball back to the Pitcher.

For batters, proper batting technique and situational batting is learned.  Batters gain experience batting from a live pitcher and accepting the call from a Plate Umpire with respect.  Baserunners at this level learn situational base running skills, stealing bases (no lead-offs) and slide safely (no head first slides) with a Base Umpire making the call.

Fielders are taught fundamental skills of proper fielding techniques along with situational positioning for coordinated coverage and communication.

Parent coaches will be trained through free training clinics and have previous experience to teach the fundamental skills and ensure the players have fun and treated fairly.  Scorekeeping and Pitch Counts are recorded (mandatory) by volunteer parents on the team along with proper Field Prep and Clean-Up.  Players are encouraged to help and support their team mates by cheering them on and taking turns playing different positions.
