Why do girls-centred sports at all?
"Girl-centered program spaces have great outcomes: Girls who are engaged in positive, female only programs, are more likely to complete school, attend college, serve their communities, and reach their potential for future success than their peers who engage in risky behaviour" - Jays Care, Girls at Bat
The Canadian Women’s Foundation reports many reasons for providing girl-centered programming:
✓ Boys and girls tend to have different needs and interests
✓ Girls are more likely to be themselves in front of girls
✓ Girls are especially reluctant to discuss certain topics in front of boys (e.g. sexuality, eating disorders, self-esteem, body image)
✓ Girls worry less about their appearance in front of other girls
✓ Girls worry less about being teased/bullied in front of other girls
✓ Female role models show girls they can be smart and powerful
Burnaby Baseball Association & South Burnaby Metro Club United
Burnaby Baseball Association and South Burnaby Metro Club formed Burnaby Valkyries to promote girls-centred sports through baseball. To provide girls with an all-girls alternative to a sport traditionally dominated by males and break the gender stereotypes. Here they will find encouragement, motivation, support and inclusion for confidence to build on. Hope you can join us!
